PROBLEMAS GLOBAIS - LIVRO 4 WIZE UP

Read the text below and analyze the role of the underlined words and expressions.

First, put the car in park in a level area an apply the parking brake. Turn the engine off and put on the hazard lights.

Then, place a large rock behind or in front of the diagonally opposing wheel to prevent the car from rolling. Afterwards get out the spare, a lug nut wrench (tire iron) and the car jack.

Loosen the lug nuts, which hold the wheel in place, before jacking up the car.

After the lug nuts have been all loosened, carefully jack up the car. Check your owner’s manual for the correct and safe place to put the jack. Make sure to jack the car up a little higher than it is necessary to remove the old tire so there is room to put the new, full tire on.

Now, remove the lug nuts all the way and set them aside in a place where they won’t roll away. The flat tire should be hanging from the threaded studs.

At this time, you should take off the flat tire and set it aside and replace it with the new tire.

Replace the lug nuts. Tighten them the same way you loosened them: Give each nut a few turns, first one, than the one opposite, working around the wheel in a start pattern. Try not to tighten adjacent nuts consecutively.

After slowly lowering the jack and removing it, you can tighten the lug nuts again as much as possible.
