Usamos um verbo singular se a frase nominal é singular: There is a meeting this evening. It will start at seven. Há uma reuniăo esta noite. Começará às sete.                 There was a lot of rain last night. Houve muita chuva ontem à noite. There is someone waiting to see you. Há alguém esperando para te ver.

Usamos um verbo plural se a frase nominal é plural: There are more than twenty people waiting to see you. Há mais de vinte pessoas esperando para te ver. There were some biscuits in the cupboard. Havia alguns biscoitos no armário. There were a lot of people shouting and waving. Havia muita gente gritando e acenando.

Para introduzir um novo tópico:

There is a meeting this evening. It will start at seven.

Há uma reuniăo esta noite. Começará às sete.

There has been an accident. I hope no one is hurt.
