Phrasal Verbs #1 (In, Out, Away and Back) - Intermediate English with Shaun #62


My laptop is running out of power, so I have to plug it in.

*I'm looking at a long weekend. There's a beetle on my shirt.

What are phrasal verbs?
Phrasal verbs are:
- two-part verbs (is more than one word)
- verb and particle
*particle - word don't necessarily have a specific meaning in the sentence but they have some kind of function int the sentence. In phrase verb are prepositions or adverb
- common particles: in, out, on, off, up, down, away, back.

grow - crescer
grow up - deixar de ser criança



feeling can gow. 
only people can gro up. Become a adult. (maturidade)

Phrasal verbs
- different meaning than the verb

You need to put on your boots if you are going outside.
I sat down on the steps and thought about my life.

Sometimes the meaning of a phrasal verb can be very different from the verb's original meaning.
Hold up - to cause a delay
hold - aguardar
Sorry I'm late. I was held up bu traffic.
Desculpe estou atrasado. Fui ocupada pelo trânsito.
traffic make me late
Hold up - to rob (roubar)
The man held me up at gun point.
O homem me segurou no ponto da arma.

traw away - to discard it, to put it in the garbage, or get rib.
Don't throw away those bananas. They're fine.

WORD ORDER
Phrasal verbs with objects
two possible places for the object:
- between the verb and the partocle
- after the particle.
*There are some times that there are certain phrasal verbs that it can only be one of the other. But for the marjority of phrase verb can be both, with exceptions.
*Don't get angry at me.

Can you do me a favor and take aout the trash?
Trash is a object
take out - verb
particle - out

You could also say :
Can you do me a favor and take the trash out?

Phrasal verbs with objects
-If the objects is a pronoun (me/you/him/her/it/etc)
Comes between the verb and particle
* with exceptions
- not after the particle

Can you do me a favor and take it out?
it - pronoun

Are they ever going to turn that music off?
Are they ever going to turn it off?
ERRADO: Are they ever going to turn off it?

Shaun's class suddently turned on him.
turned on him means to suddently to be against to become enemies
A classe de Shaun de repente se virou para ele.
virou-se sobre ele significa de repente estar contra para se tornar inimigo

Examples
When are you coming back to Canada? We'll miss you.
My wife always tells me to stay away from casinos.
Let's get out of here. I want to go home now.

-in and out
- entering or exiting (rooms, building, cars, eat ...)

The car stopped and someone got in.

find out - When did you find out you passed the test?
figure out - I can't figure out why my computer isn't working!!

run out - supply - I'm running out of energy.
acabar - fornecer - estou ficando sem energia.

go out - fire -Everyone was surprised when the lights went out.
Sair - fogo - Todos ficaram surpresos quando as luzes se apagaram.

put out - The firefighters had to put out the flames.
