Na primeira frase, however significa simple contrast.

This is when you use the word however to look at two things or two people or two ideas and discuss how they are different. It's a comparison.

CONCESSION

I know you are right; however, I think you should apologize to her.

The sentence these two clauses seem to contradict is the word that Kayo is using. They seem to be the opposite of one other. They're against each other.

A frase que essas duas cláusulas parecem contradizer é a palavra que Kayo está usando. Parecem ser o oposto um do outro. Eles estão contra o outro.

Therefore it's surprising that they are both true

Portanto, é surpreendente que ambos sejam ambos verdadeiros

Two thing that are true but they are against one another. And this idea is what we call concession. This Kind of surprising contrast. Concession is a little unexpected.

Duas coisas que são verdadeiras, mas são contra a outra. E essa idéia é o que chamamos de concessão. Esse tipo de contraste surpreendente. A concessão é um pouco inesperada.

*While and however are useful for both simple contrast and concession

*however is kind of more useful than a word like nevertheless

- While sales dropped significantly in January, they decided not to change their strategy for the following months.

If the sales went down you would expect a company to consider changing their strategy. But in this case they're saying they did nothing. So this is unexpected.

Se as vendas caíssem, você esperaria que uma empresa considerasse mudar sua estratégia. Mas neste caso eles estão dizendo que não fizeram nada. Então isso é inesperado.

Complete essas duas frases de três formas diferentes:

Tuition is rising. Enrollment continues to increase.

A taxa de matrícula está aumentando. A inscrição continua a aumentar.

1 - Although (conjunção) 1 - Although tuition is rising, enrollment continues to increase. (Você precisa da virgula, porque tem uma depend clause e main clause.) In this sentence dependent clause and main clause. If you start the sentence with your dependent clause with your clause of concession with although, while, even though or though you want to put a comma afterwards here.

2- nevertheless (advérbio) 2- Tuition is rising; nevertheless, enrollment continues to increase.

3- despite (preposição) 3 -Despite the fact that tuition is rising, enrollment continues to increase. Despite the rise in tuition, enrollment continues to increase. Por ser preposição não pode ser seguido de clause. Despite rising tuition, enrollment continues to increase. Despite rising tuition - preposicion phrase Despite preposition rising adjective tuition noun In spite of rising tuition, enrollment continues to increase.

4- Tuition is rising, enrollment continues to increase though.

though is adverb
